Frank Stella (1936–2024) was an American artist who reshaped postwar abstraction through a career defined by constant reinvention. Emerging in New York in the late 1950s, he gained early recognition for his austere Black Paintings, where symmetry and repetition reduced painting to its essential form. Over time, his work expanded into bold color, shaped canvases, and ultimately sculptural reliefs that pushed painting into three dimensions. Across decades, Stella’s practice remained both rigorous and exploratory—driven by the belief that what you see is, simply, what you see.
