Joel Shapiro (b. 1941) is an American sculptor known for his dynamic, human-scaled works that balance abstraction and figuration. Emerging in the 1970s, he developed a language of simple geometric forms—often in wood or bronze—that suggest the body in motion without fully defining it. His sculptures appear at once grounded and airborne, capturing a sense of tension, balance, and gesture. Across intimate and monumental works alike, Shapiro’s practice is marked by a quiet playfulness and a deep sensitivity to space and proportion.
